I continue my 30 Day Challenge on building my platform today with a look at Twitter.
I have a love/hate realtionship with Twitter, but I feel it can be an important tool in CONNECTING with your audience. Last I heard, Twitter is adding a new 500,000 users a day and they all want to connect with you!
No really, I’ve discovered that when I get an influx of new followers on Twitter, most are of the spam/marketing variety. That is a huge turn off to me. One thing I try not to do with Twitter is spend time “marketing” but do spend time “connecting”.
I have followers of all stripes and colors, from authors and comedians, to preachers and friends. Twitter is a great way to connect to them, using 140 characters. A buddy of mine and I have had several “tweets” going back and forth to each other with our friendly insults getting bigger and broader. My brother and I have had friendly give and takes regarding sports and I’ve found it’s a fun way to connect with some of my fantasy football cohorts.
It’s also a way to connect with my fellow writers and potential readers. Twitter, more then my Facebook page or my Tumblr, gives you greater insight into Everett Robert, the person, as opposed to Everett Robert, the writer or Everett Robert the marketer. On Twitter, you’ll see my thoughts on movies when I occasionally do #tweetmentary (usually it’s snide comments ala Mystery Science Theater 3000). I might do a wrestling hashtag (I’ll admit it, I love me some WWE style wrestling). You’ll see me cheer for my Texas Tech Red Raiders or my Oakland Raiders or express my frustration when my fantasy football or pigskin pick ’ems don’t go according to plan.
I don’t spend a lot of time promoting myself on Twitter (although my blog posts are linked there), but I do give you insight into me personally. And sometimes that’s what we need to do as well.
